Littleton Pumping Station

Value: £280,000

Location: Staines

Duration: 12 weeks

Project Brief

Pembroke & Bull Contracts Ltd was appointed by HBS to undertake specialist conservation and decoration works on behalf of Thames Water at Littleton Pumping Station, a historically significant operational water treatment facility. The project required a sensitive approach to preserve the building fabric while maintaining full operational status throughout the duration of the works.

Scope of Works

The scope of works comprised specialist DOFF cleaning, timber repairs, and full internal and external decoration to the main building. Cleaning works were carefully controlled to remove surface contamination without damaging the historic substrate, followed by targeted timber repairs prior to redecoration to provide long-term protection.

Challenges

The removal and management of lead-based paint presented a significant health and environmental challenge, requiring strict control measures. DOFF cleaning irrigation was particularly complex due to works being carried out over treated water, necessitating careful containment and monitoring procedures. In addition, the site remained fully live throughout the programme, requiring close coordination with on-site operational staff to maintain safety and uninterrupted service.

Results

The project was completed on time with no issues raised by the client. The completed works successfully restored and protected the structure while maintaining its operational integrity, ensuring the building is preserved and safeguarded for future generations
