QMUL Charterhouse Square – Research Laboratories
Value: £15,000
Location: EC1M – London
Duration: 5 weeks
Project Brief
Pembroke & Bull Contracts Ltd was appointed to undertake specialist decoration works to multiple rooms being converted into research laboratories at Queen Mary University of London’s Charterhouse Square campus. The project formed part of a wider programme to create new laboratory and office accommodation within an existing building, requiring a high standard of finish suitable for scientific research environments.
Scope of Works
Works included making good and redecorating six research laboratories using Sterishield Diamond Eggshell, providing a durable, hygienic finish appropriate for laboratory use. Additional works included the making good and decoration of three new offices and the decoration of common parts throughout the facility.
Challenges & Solutions
The laboratories were commissioned to support research relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, placing significant emphasis on programme certainty. With specialist research equipment scheduled for delivery, the works were required to be completed within a fixed timeframe. As the project was delivered under a design-and-build arrangement, late M&E alterations necessitated reactive making good and redecoration to surrounding areas immediately prior to handover.
Results
The project was completed in line with the agreed programme, enabling technicians and specialist research equipment to move into the laboratories on time. The completed spaces provided a clean, durable, and compliant environment suitable for ongoing scientific research activities.
