OXO Tower Wharf – The Bargehouse, London

Value: £35,000

Location: OXO Tower Wharf – London

Duration: 5 weeks

Project Brief

Pembroke & Bull Contracts Ltd was appointed to carry out specialist fire protection works to the exposed metal structure within The Bargehouse at OXO Tower Wharf, a landmark cultural and events venue on London’s South Bank. Following a fire safety survey, areas of exposed structural steel were identified as requiring upgrading to meet current fire safety and building regulation requirements, while preserving the building’s distinctive industrial character.

Scope of Works

Works included the preparation and protection of exposed structural steelwork throughout the venue. Loose debris and coatings were carefully removed from the steel using controlled sandblasting techniques, with excess mesh ground back where required. Intumescent coatings were then applied to all designated steel elements to achieve the required level of fire protection without compromising the visual appearance of the building.

Challenges & Solutions

Due to the iconic nature and original fabric of the building, significant care was required to retain its natural and industrial features. A key challenge was achieving compliance with fire safety requirements while maintaining the appearance of untreated steelwork. Extensive colour matching was undertaken, with multiple samples provided to the client, enabling the final topcoat to replicate the existing rusted steel finish and preserve the character of the space.

Results

The project was successfully delivered in time for a scheduled art exhibition, ensuring uninterrupted use of the venue. The completed works provided compliant fire protection while retaining the rustic industrial aesthetic of the building. The special qualities of The Bargehouse were protected, enhanced, and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
